Every residential replacement starts with a full tear-off. No layovers. Old shingles, underlayment, and damaged flashing come off the roof before anything new goes on. The deck gets a full inspection. Any soft spots, rotted sheathing, or moisture-damaged boards are replaced before ice and water shield goes down.
Minnesota Code and Ice Dams
Minnesota requires ice and water shield at all eaves and valleys. That minimum exists because Twin Cities winters produce ice dams, and ice dam water travels backward under shingles and reaches the deck if the barrier is not there.
